Captivate (Submerged Sun #1)
by Vanessa Garden
Genre: YA Fantasy
Release Date: August 10th 2016
Summary from Goodreads:
In a glittering underwater world, where danger lurks behind beauty and power...
For the past twelve months since her parents’ death, seventeen-year-old Miranda Sun has harboured a dark secret — a secret that has strained the close relationship she once shared with her older sister, Lauren. In an effort to repair this broken bond, Miranda’s grandparents whisk the siblings away on a secluded beach holiday. Except before Miranda gets a chance to confess her life-changing secret, she’s dragged underwater by a mysterious stranger while taking a midnight swim.
Awakening days later, Miranda discovers that she’s being held captive in a glittering underwater city by an arrogant young man named Marko...the King of this underwater civilisation.
Nineteen-year-old Marko intends to marry Miranda in order to keep his crown from falling into the sinister clutches of his half-brother, Damir. There’s only one problem. Miranda is desperate to return home to right things with her sister and she wants nothing to do with Marko. Trying to secure her freedom, Miranda quickly forms an alliance with Robbie — Marko’s personal guard. However, she soon discovers that even underwater, people are hiding dangerous secrets...
Captivate Character Interview with Marko and Miranda by author Vanessa Garden
Marko and Miranda are seated beside one another. Miranda is wearing jeans and a fitted t-shirt with embroidered robins flying across her chest. On her right hand she wears a ring she keeps touching. Marko is wearing head-to-toe black and knee-high boots with daggers strapped to them. He notices me eyeing them and takes one out, offering me a closer look and warning me the blade can split hairs. I take it, feeling giddy to be touching something of Marko’s. It’s beautiful. The hilt is silver, highly polished, worn with use and studded with golden crystals. I lean forward to hand it back and as I do I notice a scar on Marko’s forehead. I make a mental note to ask about it later.
Author: So, great to have you here today, guys.
Marko nods and clears his throat.
Miranda: No problem.
Author: So, let’s get right to it then.
What makes the underwater city of Marin special? Miranda, you go first.
Miranda: First of all, the city is so beautiful it takes your breath away. It’s lit up by these gemstones called light-crystals, the city’s energy source, and as a result the entire city glitters. But what makes it special is not its beauty. For some reason being in Marin, and away from the real world, helps me to see my true self. I don’t put on any masks in Marin. It’s all me and I like being able to come clean, faults and all, on who I really am as a person.
Marko: It’s my home. I love every square-inch and could never imagine living elsewhere.
Author: What is your most treasured possession?
Marko: Possessions aren’t as important to me as people, but, if I had to choose, it would be my grandmother’s ring and my father’s dagger. (He taps the hilt of the dagger he showed me a moment ago)
Miranda: My mother’s laptop. It has all of her screenplays on it. She kept a daily journal there too. I like to read her thoughts whenever I’m feeling a bit lost or just when I miss her. (She opens her mouth to say something else but then closes it and instead gently caresses the ring on her finger with the pad of her thumb)
Author: What is your idea of happiness?
Marko: (his grey-blue eyes flicker over Miranda before turning back to me) To love and be loved in return.
Miranda: (blushes and shifts in her seat while Marko stares at her intently) Happiness is where I stop losing my loved ones. I want to be able to love without fearing loss.
Author: Okay, while on the subject of fear, what is your greatest fear?
Marko: The destruction of my kingdom.
Miranda: Never seeing my sister or grandparents again (she glances at Marko from out the corner of her eye) I’m also worried about making the right choices. I want to know if I can trust my instincts.
Author: What trait to you most dislike in a person?
Miranda: Dishonesty… and deceit.
Marko: I agree. Especially when the treachery is committed by a blood relative. To betray a family member is the most despicable of acts. (Marko’s cheeks flush with quiet rage and he grips the chair arms until his knuckles turn white)
Author: Okay… let’s lighten things up a little. What would I find on your bedside table?
Miranda: (visibly relaxes and smiles softly) A bottle of perfume given to me by somebody special.
Marko: (releases a deep breath, releases chair arms and dips his head to hide a cute grin) A well-thumbed book – ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck - most recently read by somebody very dear to my heart.
Author: Marko, do you read often?
Marko: (stares wistfully into space) I used to love to read. But as time passes and (his grin disappears and his eyes seem to lose their sparkle) my responsibility to Marin grows, I find I don’t have that luxury anymore.
Miranda: I’ve always got my head in a book. I love, love, love to read.
Marko smiles at Miranda’s exuberant response and she smiles back.
Author: Okay, last question. Any regrets so far in life?
Marko: (sighs and rubs the back of his neck.) I have a great regret which has tortured me in my sleep since I was ten years old (his blue eyes turn cold, the colour of steel) Because of this I have vowed to live with no regrets from here on (he looks at Miranda, pointedly)
Miranda: (shifts in her seat) I regret not telling my parents ‘I love you’ enough. I regret what I said to my best friend at the beach, one winter’s night over three years ago, and… (she bites a nail before tucking her hands beneath her thighs) I regret not telling a certain someone, very recently, how I truly feel about them. But I hope to change that soon.
Marko stares at Miranda, eyebrows raised but she doesn’t meet his eyes. She thanks me and stands to leave. Marko immediately rises and gets the door for her. He is much taller than her. Her head reaches the middle of his chest. They’d make a cute couple.
Author: Thanks for coming, guys!
Miranda smiles over her shoulder. The smile is mysterious and her wide brown eyes sparkle with deep secrets.
Marko nods and gives me a wink before following Miranda out the door. When the door closes, I remember about the scar on Marko’s face, but it’s too late. It will have to wait for next time.

But the more Aspen finds out about her family’s past, the more dangerous her future becomes. This riveting fantasy is full of action, adventure, and romance. Suspenseful and exhilarating!
"Want me to come with you?" I looked up at his grin. Of course I did. I'd been crushing on him since we were ten. Six years was a long time to have a crush. But... "You'd better not. I'm picking up three sophomore cheerleaders. There might be too much girl drama for you to handle." He threw his head back and laughed, then stepped closer. "I think you're right. I'll see you tomorrow." Aspen talking with Nate A large puddle spread out in front of us on the road. It looked like we could make it through, so I pushed harder on the gas pedal. Water splashed on all sides but then took control of the tires. The car swerved right toward the river. "No. NO. NO!" I turned the wheel toward the road. It didn't work. Fast running water pulled the car into the flooded river. The girls screamed as we rode the car like a water ride at an amusement park. My brain froze. I couldn't think of what to do. The river took control of the car, spinning us around. Aspen with friends driving in a Texas flash flood.

She can only take so much, though, and when her newest employee, Kate, makes things harder at the bakery, Julia has to find a way to simplify her life. Can she do it or will she end up a basket case? Find out how she does it in this hilarious conclusion to the Spinster series!

Praise for the Book
"My favorite of the series!" - Author Jennifer Peel
"Becky Monson did it again!" - Amazon Reviewer
"It’s rare that I want to give a book six stars, but this is certainly one of them." -Blogger Connie Fischer, Bookworm2bookworm
“Pick it up, Julia! You can do this!”
I’m in the seventh circle of hell.
“Come on! Let’s move faster!” My sister Anna yells over the construction that we’re currently passing. As expected, we get a few whoops and whistles tossed at us from the workers. Pity flattery, I’m sure. Well, maybe not for Anna, but certainly for me. There’s absolutely nothing attractive about me right now.
To start, I don’t know if I’ve ever sweated this hard in my life. I look like I’ve taken a shower fully clothed. I’m sticky and perspiring, and it’s not even that hot outside. It’s a typical day near the end of May in Denver, Colorado. How did I let Anna convince me to do this? Oh that’s right, there was no convincing. She forced me. “It’ll be good for you,” she had said, lying through her devil teeth.
At this point I don’t know if my lungs will ever be the same. They actually ache with pain. And then there’s the ache in my calves, and really every other part of my body. Whoever thought of running as an extracurricular activity should be shot. A form of torture, yes. Exercise? I’d rather get a tooth pulled without Novocain.

Rachel Laine (The Women of Merryton #3) by Jennifer Peel
Rachel Whitney’s life changed forever when Drew, the son of her twin sister, Sydney, was placed in her arms—and there he stayed. At twenty-two, she had no idea what she was doing, but in that moment, she knew that raising Drew was what she was meant to do with her life. Fiercely independent, Rachel makes her own way managing her family's insurance agency. Decidedly against introducing any men into her life, or Drew’s, she protects her heart against all romantic entanglements. But what she didn’t count on was a letter from her sister that leads a famous secret to her door eight years after her sister’s death. A secret with the same eyes as her son’s. Desperate not to get the courts involved, Rachel allows Drew’s previously unknown father, Andrew Turner, into their lives, and to her surprise, little by little into her heart. But for Rachel, taking that step could open her family to a firestorm of media attention that not even Merryton can protect them from. Is love worth the risk? Or will Andrew's fame and ambition ruin their chances?
With reluctance, I answered. “Hello.”
“Hey, Rachel Laine.”
“Andrew, why are you calling?”
“If I didn’t know better, I would think you didn’t want to hear from me.”
“Imagine that,” I responded.
His laugh came through, loud and clear. “I wanted you to know I made it safely to Chicago.”
“Don’t take this the wrong way—” He laughed even louder before I could finish.
“—but why would I care?” I got in.
“Ouch. That hurts, Rachel Laine. You know, when I use that line on you, at least I follow it up with a compliment.”
“Yes, and I can’t tell you how nice it is to hear a man tell me all weekend he’s not interested in me.” “It wasn’t all weekend.”
“Why are you calling?”
“I wanted to check in with you, because of the weather.”
“That’s nice of you, but we only got a few inches, and we’re used to the snow up here.”
“Yeah … of course you are. So, what did you guys do today?”
“We went to church and then overdosed on super hero movies.”
“Aren’t you going to ask how my day was?”
“Are you being serious?”
“It’s only polite.”
“Okay … How was your day?”
“It was horrible. My first flight got cancelled and then I had to wait for hours in the airport for the next available flight, and to top it off, I had to fly coach.”
“Oh, how terrible.”
“You’ve seen how long my legs are. They don’t belong in coach. And now I find out I could have been watching action movies with you guys all day.” Was this guy for real? I couldn’t tell if he was joking or not.
“And what makes you think you would have been invited?” “
Why do you think I would have waited for an invitation?”
Praise for the Book "You nailed it!!! These books keep getting better and better each time! I looovvved it!" "How is it possible that you just keep getting better? I swear this one is my favorite." "I literally got lost in Merryton again. It is one of my favorite places to visit."
